There are several doctors and clinics in the north state that provide “recommendations” for medical marijuana (physicians cannot legally provide prescriptions, therefore it is instead called a “recommendation”).
Most, but not all doctors, require that you bring copies of your medical file or medical records or some verifiable proof of your medical condition, so before your appointment get copies of your records from your previous doctor or caretaker!
It is your legal right to request copies of your medical records from your physician for any reason, however they may charge you for copies and it may take them several days to copy them so make arrangements in advance.
For those who have absolutely no written medical records, some doctors will accept as proof your current medical condition (such as being in a wheel chair or blind, etc) or scars from surgeries or accidents.
Medical marijuana is recommended and used to treat almost every ailment, including to lessen anxiety and stress, help with problems sleeping, manage chronic pain from years of hard work or accidents, and even helps with battling other addictions such as alcohol, meth, and prescription pain medications.
Your “recommendation” will likely come with an embossed letter from your doctor that you may show as proof of your legally protected status if you are questioned by the police for possession or cultivation.
Your “recommendation” and your medical reason for using medical marijuana is protected privacy and is NOT shared by your doctor with any state or federal agency including law enforcement, Social Security/disability, Medi-Cal, CPS or the Veteran’s Administration.
You can feel safe, that only you and your medical doctor know about your “recommendation”, and the GreenCCC does not share your information with anyone, ever, and keeps none of your records on site.

If you know of any clinics or doctors in this area offering medical marijuana recommendations please let us know so we can list them! The California chapter of NORML (National Organization For the Reform of Marijuana Laws) has a physician finder on their site too, a great reference! www.canorml.org
Will California Residents always need a recommendation in order to obtain medical marijuana?? Maybe not. On the ballot in November 2012 there will be several initiatives that if passed intend to completely legalize marijuana (up to an ounce ) for anyone over the age of 21. So register to vote!
But for seriously ill patients and patients with chronic medical conditions a physician’s recommendation will be necessary for people who intend to grow or posses more than 1 ounce of marijuana.
Until then, members of the GreenCCC must have valid ID and a physician’s recommendation to join and participate in our Collective.
